Two massive, radical extremist environmental out-of-state groups spent millions in 2014 to defeat North Carolina legislators. The Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC), whose headquarters is in China and New York, worked with the Southern Environmental Law Center (SELC) to defeat six Republican legislative candidates by creating and funneling money to a shell group known as North Carolina Environmental Partnership (NCEP).
Civitas filed a complaint with the North Carolina State Board of Elections (SBOE) against NRDC and SELC contending that they had violated state law and federal regulations by paying for TV ads but indicating the ads were paid for by the NCEP. There is no evidence that the NCEP actually existed. It appeared to be a shell group used to hide the identities of SELC and NRDC. Because neither the NRDC nor the SELC identifies donors in their reports, millions of dollars were spent in this state by groups that refuse to identify their funding sources.
NRDC was a founding member and major funder of the North Carolina Environmental Partnership ad campaign in 2014. NRDC is a major proponent of the unscientific claim of climate change.
